National Service Scheme

About NSS

"Not Me, But You"

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a public service initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, launched on 24th September 1969 during Mahatma Gandhi's birth centenary year as an instrument of national integration. Its core philosophy is "education through service" — building personality and civic responsibility in students by connecting classroom learning with hands-on community service. Through the NSS cell, DDUMC students get a platform to volunteer for social causes, develop leadership qualities, and give back to society while they study.

Areas of Work

Health & Blood Donation

NSS volunteers organise and participate in blood donation camps, health check-up drives, and awareness campaigns on hygiene and preventive healthcare for students and the surrounding community.

Environmental Conservation

From tree plantation drives to cleanliness campaigns (Swachhata Abhiyan) and waste management initiatives, NSS volunteers work towards building a greener, cleaner campus and neighbourhood.

Literacy & Education Support

Volunteers support adult literacy programmes and provide educational assistance — including books, stationery, and mentoring — to underprivileged children in nearby communities.

Social Awareness Campaigns

NSS volunteers run awareness drives on issues such as gender equality, substance abuse, road safety, and voter awareness, encouraging responsible and informed citizenship.

Community & Rural Outreach

As part of the national scheme, volunteers take part in outreach camps that support local community needs — from disaster relief and donation drives to small-scale infrastructure support.

Personality & Leadership Development

Beyond community service, NSS nurtures leadership, teamwork, and civic responsibility in students, helping them grow into socially conscious, well-rounded professionals.
